Institute of Gerontology

The Institute of Gerontology (IfG) of the University of Heidelberg, established by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ursula Lehr - a former Federal Minister of the FRG - in 1986, is now directed by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Andreas Kruse. After having been awarded professorial honours by the University of Heidelberg in 1991, Prof. Kruse returned here in 1997, after a period at Greifswald University, thus leaving his chair as the founding director of Greifswald's Institute of Psychology .
In 1991 the IfG became a cooperation-centre of the World Health Organization WHO, having already offered postgraduate courses in gerontology (for the Diploma exam/ M.A. Equivalent) since 1988. Additionally, since 2005 the IfG has offered an undergraduate degree in Teaching Studies for Nursing Science in Gerontology for prospective teachers at public vocational colleges.
Over the next years, the IfG will synchronize some parts of its study program with a number of internal, national and international research projects. This will enable postgraduate students to complement their scientific curriculum with practical and professional in-house experience and project-related internships with one of the IfG's partners, which include
