Social participation and responsibility among the elderly in Eastern Europe

A cooperation between the "Memory, Responsibility, and Future” foundation and The Institute of Gerontology at the University of Heidelberg (2008-2012)

Primary Investigator: Prof. Dr. Andreas Kruse, Prof. Dr. Eric Schmitt

Project Coordinator: Jörg Hinner, Ass. jur. Dipl.-Gerontol.

Project Description

The project encompasses the scientific monitoring of existing and future projects associated with the funding focus on International Humanitarian Cooperation by the "Memory, Responsibility, and Future” foundation.

The first priority of the cooperation between the foundation and the institute of Gerontology is the social appreciation of life experiences of those persecuted under National Socialism
The intention is for the scientific monitoring to lead to a deeper understanding of the individual abilities of those people whose life was characterised by political persecution and dictatorship. It is therefore necessary to explore the best social and infra-structural conditions of the environment that would allow them to maintain and implement their individual abilities.

The project's starting point is the assumption that victims of political repression are not only people who were traumatized, but who also retain abilities, which they can integrate by communicating with members of the following generations.

In this project the University of Heidelberg will cooperate with international scientists from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus to send scientific participants to humanitarian projects funded or operated by the "Memory, Responsibility, and Future” foundation in these countries.
