Institute of Gerontology About us
The Institute of Gerontology was founded in 1986 by Prof. Dr. phil. Dr. h.c. mult. Ursula Lehr - former Federal Minister - and was headed from 1997 to 2021 by Prof. Dr. phil. Dr. h.c. Dipl.-Psych. Andreas Kruse. Prof. Dr. Eric Schmitt is currently the provisional director of the institute, Prof. Dr. Anja Leist will take up the post of director on 15 May 2026.
The Institute of Gerontology investigates ageing and later life as a heterogeneous, multifactorial, and societally relevant phase of life, using perspectives from the behavioural sciences, cultural studies, social sciences, epidemiology, and demography.
Research on ageing as a complex interplay of societal, social, and biological conditions is conducted using interdisciplinary approaches, with a strong emphasis on the empirical analysis of complex longitudinal data. Successful ageing and ageing under challenging conditions are examined based on functional, (mental) health-related, and cognitive measures, with a particular focus on dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. We also conduct research on topics related to the ageing process and old age, such as the organization of care and individual attitudes toward death and dying.
Furthermore, the Institute’s work addresses socioeconomic conditions, societal dynamics, and intergenerational processes in ageing societies. Both basic research and applied research - with insights for policy and care - are highly valued.
